Ravens force a Replay

Coalville Town FC 1 (Hempenstall 80')

Grimsby Town FC 1 (Rodman 51')

FA Trophy First Round Proper, 30th November 2013

Attendance - 844

The FA trophy, effectively the middle brother of the big cups to be won with the FA Cup and FA Vase also. In some respects it gets overlooked by a lot of clubs, often with the 'smaller' clubs seeing this as an opportunity to play at Wembley. This was a classic example of that with a number of Step 4 teams playing Conference teams and coming out very impressing. I have to say a big well done to fellow NPL1S teams Gresley and Leek Town who went down 2-1 at Wrexham and won 2-1 at Altrincham respectively, both were fantastic results and I wish Leek all the best in the competition. Tamworth beat Macclesfield Town 2-0 to set up a 2nd round tie against Boston.

This was the biggest game that Coalville have played at their home ground Owen Street and they went all out for the occasion. This was shown by the change in admission prices, rising understandably for the day but still at a good and affordable price. The programme has got a banner saying 'Commemorative Edition' on the top and the ground was segregated and became host to many more food outlets, showing the importance of this game on the history of Coalville Town. All credit to the club and the town who saw lots of volunteers make a noticeable difference to the ground and organising so many fans.

I've already been to Owen Street this season when they played Leek Town in the league, drawing 0-0 in front of about a quarter of the ground compared to the Grimsby game. Staff and supporters alike are always very friendly and it is a very pleasant place to be, especially when sunny. The ground is located down a narrow road just away from the town centre, next to the local cricket teams pitch. A good sized seating stand is located down one side with the dugouts on the opposite side to this and behind one goal is covered stand which usually houses the Coalville flags. There is usually 1 or 2 food vans, a club shop, club office, seating for both clubs officials and a club house for both football and cricket teams. Overall it's a fair size for the NPL1S and all facilities are good, but as the club look to possibly progress up the Non League ladder then they may need to invest.

I got to the ground early so that the Town wasn't too congested and to make sure I got a programme, I paid my £6 admission and purchased the special programme for £2.50 and started making my way around the ground which had already started to fill up. It seemed a lot different to usual but the effort was worth it as it was being well used, I sat around half way in the stand and tried to get myself warm. As the match started Coalville showed their intent. Attack seemed to be the best way of defence and the 'ball over the top' was certainly a tactic used throughout however it did sometimes work, the quick attackers had the ability to beat the Grimsby defence and you couldn't tell the gap of 3 leagues early on.

The rest of the first half saw a close encounter between the two sides, both troubled a number of times. Coalville's best chance came when a free kick was deflected but the Grimsby keeper made a very good save and the ball was knocked away but really you could see that Grimsby would be dangerous on the break. It felt that Coalville would have to score in order to get a draw from the game as it was only a matter of time before Grimsby showed their skill with a very strong team selection, but at Half time it ended goalless.

Half Time: Coalville Town 0-0 Grimsby Town

My prediction happened soon after the start of the second half, as Grimsby scored a very good goal but the linesman flagged on the far side for off-side, a massive let off for Coalville there! strangely
this happened again only a couple of minutes later when a close range headed goal was ruled out for off-side but that looked more clear than the first one, somehow it still remained 0-0 after these two scares but not for long. On 51 minutes Alex Rodman curled in a lovely shot straight into the top corner of the net for Grimsby Town 1-0 Coalville Town.

From here on the game became tight once more, it have swung either way but seemed Grimsby had made their impact already shown. Coalville became more attacking but risked giving away more chances at the back, but this was rewarded in the 80th minute. Carney played a lovely pass into the path of Hempenstall who calmly slotted beyond McKeown. Coalville 1-1 Grimsby.

Both sides had chances to find a winning goal but as the full time whistle was blown it ended 1-1, meaning a reply in Grimsby the Tuesday after. It was a very good game played in tough conditions and great to see such a performance from Coalville, everyone involved with the club should be proud.

Full Time: Coalville Town 1-1 Grimsby Town

Admission - £6 (Concessions, £10 Adults, prices for that game only)
Programme - £2.50 (Commemorative edition, larger than usual)

Entertainment - 4/5
Price - 3.5/5 (Prices raised for this game, understandably)
Programme - 4/5 (Very good, large, lots of good notes and write ups, detailed results and tables etc, all in colour)
Facilities - 4/5 (More put in place for this game with larger crowd and segregation, usually a 3/5)

Moatmen Dig Deep

Gresley FC 2 (Langston 70', Lyons 71')

Romulus FC 1 (Marshall 40')

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division 1 South, 23rd November 2013

Attendance - 262

Well this is my 5th review in my first month of blogging, Thank you for the continued support and I've passed 2,500 page views already! Please continue tweeting me (@chris_sharp18) with what you think and I'm always grateful for any retweets or feedback. I'd love to continue to do more with this blog and have a number of ideas but I'm still fairly new at this.

First of all, if you'd like me to come and visit you or your club then tweet me and I'll make a note and be along as soon as possible. I'd love to know if any clubs would consider putting a  review of themselves by someone in their programme? So that hopefully I could publish a review for them to use after I've been. Or if any clubs would want me to visit so I could write them a piece? Maybe a piece about general ground hopping or reviews from other games that I've done?
Please can you or your club respond to me whenever possible as it would be great to see their opinion, I fully expect most clubs to simply say "No" but I'm not expecting it to happen anyway, it was only a thought. Any club, any tier, any where I'd love to hear from you!
You can simply tweet or direct message me on twitter @chris_sharp18

Secondly, I sometimes feel clubs can underestimate the effect of ground hoppers and blogs, they can actually be a crucial advertisement for clubs which are finding harder than ever to attract large crowds. Ground hops have became increasingly popular also providing big boosts for clubs, the Notts Senior League ground hop was a success last season and hop for the same this time but the Northern League Ground hop has also proved very successful. Even the Non League Day Conference ground hop (which I done) was a success. Now onto my actual review...

In the morning of the game I didn't quite know where to go, Tamworth were playing against Kidderminster so this left me with a choice from a few other local teams, but I shortened it down to either Coalville or Gresley. Both in the same league with mixed fortunes, Coalville continuing from last season and trying to gain promotion where as Gresley made a below standard start to the season which has picked up lately. Looking at the opposition I thought this game would be more interesting and entertaining. I imagined that Coalville would ideally look for a hard thought win against Lincoln United who seem an average team in this league and they'd most likely get it, which they did, 2-1 the score. So this left me with Gresley, a place I've been many times before.

For some unknown reason I hadn't been to Gresley for a league game this season, but I'm glad I chose this one! I first watched Gresley 2 seasons ago when they beat Westfields 3-2 in the last minute of the game, eventually becoming champions of the MFA and getting promoted to the NPL1S. Since then I've watched them a number of times and twice this pre season, with losses of 3-1 and 5-0 against Shepshed Dynamo and Solihull Moors respectively. I became quite worried for them as the close season saw a number of players leave, including Jordi Gough and Michael Nottingham along with their manager Gary Norton. With this big transformation happening so quickly I wondered if they could replicate the success of last season, the start of the campaign reflected this winning only 2 out of their first 7 league games, although a 2-0 victory against Kettering in the FA Cup did show promise. They were hovering just above the relegation zone and all looked worrying. In the past month this has all changed, 7 unbeaten in league and multiple cups and a string of promising signings where everyone seems settled under Martin Rowe. In 16th place before this game there was still work to be done. Romulus on the other hand have enjoyed an initial great start to the season, seeing them get some great results but are beginning to move ore mid table now, having won and lost the same amount of games before this one. Marcus Brown has been their main goal threat with 13 already and you could see his quality. I thought it seemed like it was going to be an interesting game and that it was.

I made the short walk to the ground from where we parked, paid our admission, brought a programme and entered via the gate behind one goal. The stadium is quite compact and located just off a main road in between lots of houses but at the same time the space is quite well used. The ground is now 3 sided due to them having to make the pitch longer when they got promotion into this league, behind the other goal there the left hand side when entering is fully covered, with more covered terrace and wooden seating running along the left hand side of the pitch. On the right you find the club house, club shop and offices, main stand, dugouts and changing rooms. Uncovered terrace is also located either side of the Main stand and there is also some covered down towards the far goal. For the league their currently in the number of seats is very good, must be a couple of hundred and everyone is capable of going under cover. The ground has a certainly feel about it, like what you'd imagine a proper traditional non league ground to be, following the clubs history. Following the demise of Gresley Rovers the club have re-established themselves and been on the rapid rise ever since. Everyone is very friendly and the club house is welcoming.

The match began as both teams looked gain a result and it was quite open.Gresley started having the best of the chances with quick breaks sometimes catching Romulus out. Martin Rowe had made two changes with Hayden Johns replacing Mitch Hanson and Alex Steadman coming into the midfield. Kieran O'Connell went close to opening the scoring for Gresley, but the onrushing Romulus keeper blocked his shot. They continued piling pressure on and went close again when Steadman's great run down the right ended with a  cross which was met by Piliero but his header came back off the bar and O'Connell fired the rebound over. Sam Grice then hit a volley which Romulus keeper Exall did extremely well to get a finger to it. Romulus started getting back into the game and Gresley keeper Alex Townsend made a fine save as Marcus Brown smashed in a free kick. The visitors took the lead in the 40th minute. A corner from Turton on the right was met by Marshall who was able to plant his free header into the net, with no chance for Townsend making it 1-0 to Romulus. This is how it remained at half time.

Half Time: Gresley 0-1 Romulus

Romulus started the second half well with Townsend pushing Brown's free kick away. However an inspired double substitution changed this, which saw Jack Langton and Mickey Lyons come on. Gresley then began to apply pressure with captain Jamie Barrett having a header cleared off the line and Langston having a goal bound shot deflected away for a corner. He took the corner from the left and curled the ball over everyone and somehow into the far corner of the net, a quite extraordinary goal for Gresley 1-1 Romulus!

Less than a minute later Gresley doubled their lead. A great move from a counter attack down the left hand side ended with a shot blocked in the box, the ball came out to Lyons who slotted it into the net with Exall helpless. Within 10 minutes of coming on both subs had scored to now make it Gresley 2-1 Romulus.

The game wasn't safe for Gresley yet as Langston forced a good save from Exall but Romulus had a number of chances to force a draw. A shot from Lee Smith smacked Townsend's near post which eventually led to a shot was blocked on the line by Barrett. Gresley responded well and went close twice themselves late on Exall held a low shot the other was blocked. Romulus had one more attempt to get a share of the points but Townsend was equal to Blake Thompson's low shot. The game finished Gresley 2-1 Romulus which matched the way the game was played but Romulus must have felt gutted to give away their hard fought lead. This keeps Gresley's unbeaten run and slumps Romulus further but it was a very exciting and tense game to watch.
Full Time: Gresley 2-1 Romulus

Saints on the march

Boldmere St Michaels FC 3 (Baker, Osborne, Edmunds)

Tipton Town FC 2 (Ashton, Gater)

Midland Football Alliance, 16th November 2013

Attendance - 84 (officially but more present)

I didn't intend to even go to this game, but Boldmere is a ground I've been meaning to go to for over a year now. I was expecting my choice to either be Stapenhill, Bolehall or Tamworth, out of which I would have probably gone to Bolehall but looking at the time and how to get their I decided it wasn't too late and the destination was the Mikes. I always look at their results and have been monitoring their progress this season, the club are going well in the MFA where they are established and have a record for being friendly. They're currently 3rd in the league having won all of their home games where as Tipton have yet to win an away game lying 12th in the league, there can only be one outcome.

On arrival at the ground I paid my admission, got my programme and went for a walk around. First thoughts are that it was a very pleasant place with a modern seating stand running along one side and large changing rooms/ food/ bar behind the home goal. The slope on the pitch was noticeable and exploited a lot throughout the game but not too bad. Everyone was very friendly and I took a seat about half way to get a good view of the action. There was plenty of parking at the ground and the sports club was located on the opposite side to the seats. Supporters were in high spirits and all were celebrating 70 years service at the club for Harry Peakman. It was great to see support for him and the club for what truly is a remarkable achievement. I had a minute or two before the game to flick through my programme which is a goo read for only £1, 20 pages in full colour and everything you want really however there doesn't appear to be an MFA league table? Only thing I noticed but it does already appear to be packed with notes, information and adverts which I can't complain about, plus I'm usually quite picky on programmes because I love collecting them.

Onto the game and it started off in full flow, both teams looked confident with good attacking moves but the first goal of the game went predictably to the hosts. A short corner was passed back to Baker who's shot curled perfectly into the top left corner of the net for Boldmere 1-0 Tipton early on. From here on the home side could assert their dominance further and had a number of attacking opportunities,  the second goal came from a great piece of play where a the ref giving advantage led to the winger put a low ball into the box for Osborne to poke it home for 2-0 to Boldmere. Many would have thought that the Mikes would go on and win comfortably from here but no, Tipton came back into it. A well taken shot saw the ball bounce off the crossbar and fall straight into the path of the supporting striker for a tap in and reduced the gap to 1. Boldmere 2-1 Tipton was how it remained at half time.

Both teams came out for the second half which was quite tense as a goal either way would completely change the game, most of the play was in the midfield and neither team could really find a clear opening. The 4th goal of the game was for Boldmere, a corner was whipped in from the right an found the head of unmarked Edmunds at the far post, surely the result was safe at 3-1? What must have been no more than 2 minutes later I was tweeting the goal when I suddenly looked up to find a low shot go into the bottom left corner from Gater to make it Boldmere 3-2 Tipton. Game on again!

From here on it became even more tense when a quick attacking move saw a shot creeping into the corner saved well from the Mikes keeper which found the Tipton oncoming striker but his stab at the ball somehow found the keepers arms from a brilliant dive, so so close! That proved costly as it was their best chance for 3-3 and even though they still troubled it wasn't enough to find another goal. The fascinating and very close game ended Boldmere 3-2 Tipton and was a great advert for non league football on the international break weekend.

After the game I had a final walk around and asked an official if I'd be able to buy a club badge, which I did for £3 and I left the ground very happy, can't wait to return!

Admission - £3 (concessions) £5 Adults £1 for local season ticket holders

Price - 4.5/5 (about average for the league but still very good value)
